The Hundal lab is located within the Division of Cell Signalling & Immunology (CSI), which was recently formed by the merger of the Division of Molecular Physiology and the Division of Cell Biology & Immunology. CSI is one of seven Divisions in the College of Life Sciences (CLS) at the University of Dundee and hosts research groups whose work is relevant to the pathologies associated with cancer, diabetes, infectious disease, autoimmunity and allergy. CLS is also home to the MRC Protein Phosphorylation Unit, the Scottish Institute for Cell Signalling, the Drug Discovery Unit and the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification. CLS employs close to 800 research staff and is truly cosmopolitan in its composition (having individuals from over sixty different nationalities) and boasts a range of state-of-the-art core facilities and research infrastructure that supports world-class research. A variety of scientific and technical services are available to research staff within the CLS and, in some cases, to external clients.
About Dundee
Dundee is located in the north east of Scotland and has one of the most beautiful settings in Scotland, from mountains and lochs in the west, to miles of coastline in the east; the city is surrounded by magnificent Scottish scenery providing excellent opportunities for hill walking, sking and water sports. Dundee is an hour's drive from the sights of Edinburgh and only twenty minutes from the golf courses in St. Andrews.
Dundee grew as a city through the local jute, jam and journalism industries, which are commonly referred to as the three J's. However after the decline of the traditional industries the city has re-invented itself and now employs a significant number of people in the fields of health care, biotechnology as well as the digital industry - Dundee has a very strong software development industry as it is home to the company that produced the Grand Theft Auto series of computer games. In addition to these Dundee has developed an international reputation for its work in the biomedical sciences thanks largely to the research being done in the CLS at the University of Dundee. The University of Dundee ranked 1st in the UK and is one of the top 25 Universities in the world for Biological Sciences (by citations) according to the QS World University Rankings. CLS has consistently been voted as one of the best places to work by readers of the Scientist magazine.
Dundee is also the home of RRS Discovery, Captain Scott's famous Antarctic research ship. RRS Discovery is now held in a dry dock at Discovery Point, a purpose built visitor attraction which tells the story of the 'Heroes of the Ice' who at the turn of the 19th Century ventured into the unknown wilderness of Antarctica in search of scientific knowledge. Little was known about this frozen continent and RRS Discovery is unique in that she was built specifically for exploration into the Antarctic. Discovery Point tells the story of RRS Discovery from her construction in Dundee in 1900, on her numerous voyages around the world then returning to her home in Dundee where she remains the focal point of the 'City of Discovery '.
